DJ Whatt, the funky breaks technician, is not just another DJ born and raised in Brooklyn, NY. This label boss, producer, remixer and DJ has many releases. He’s a man on a mission to move the dancefloors worldwide spreading the funky breakbeat sound.

For DJ Whatt, growing up in Brooklyn was a very influential musical experience. He started out spinning hip-hop, and like many DJs, he used whatever equipment that was available. He then transitioned from hip-hop to breaks with his sound strongly influenced from his younger years listening to hip-hop, a lot of b-boy stuff, early DJ Icey production and UK hardcore.

“I heard [Icey] play his “1-2-3-4-5-6-7-8” track like three or four times and people were going crazy, and I recognized some of the b-boy samples in there so I got hooked,” he remembers.

With the desire to start his own label, Whatt Kastle, DJ Whatt intended to put out solely original work.

But the opposite kinda happened. He released a lot of remixes — and did great — but it wasn’t getting enough validity in Whatt’s mind so he closed it down.

In 2004, his Electronic Music Under One Roof (EMUOR) label was born. “Initially I opened up EMUOR with Madame Mercury, and it started off great ... We built it from the ground up ... [as a] resource to get out domestic breaks but also [for] signing international artists. EMUOR created some sub-labels to cover all sounds: B4, Level (house), Intertwine (dark beats), Tone Three (funky breaks), and HomeBase which ... I think I am going to keep it around to reissue old tunes hence the name HomeBase,” he explains. “So this year we have around seven solid releases ... I just got through signing a deal so all tunes will be available on all digital download sites ... ”

And the hustle never stops for him either.

Already an established producer, he still looks for label placement for his own tracks. Getting his start only six years ago, his discography is compiled of 65 percent remix work and 35 percent original production, making a lot of his releases white labels.

He also recently finished a remix that Universal commissioned him for. However, his music gets played all over the world and by some of the best DJs/producers.

He is close in finalizing a deal with a radio satellite company, for his own radio show and doing more work with other licensing houses and digital download sites.

DJ Whatt explains the deal with the digital download sites. “Since I can not legally release some of the remixes that I do, I want people to understand that everything behind the original track are beats that I originally wrote. So on such sites like beatport.com they came up with this idea ... [They’ll] be selling my beats as a DJ tool for DJs’/producers’ own personal use or if you’re at a show you have a breakbeat you can play live with proper break downs. So now you can do remixes live by purchasing this from beatport.com.”

Also in the works are a few original tracks to be released with the rest of 2006’s releases under EMUOR as well as a number of collaborations that will be released on vinyl.
